6-10 July 2020
Welcome to the 43rd Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) Conference 2020 to be held at National Institute of Education, Singapore.
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend the 43rd annual conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) to be held at the National Institute for Education (NIE), Singapore from July 6th to 10th. 2020 is a big year for research in mathematics education with three conferences being held in succession in Asia, beginning with MERGA and followed by ICME14 in China and the annual PME conference in Thailand. This is the second time the MERGA conference has been hosted in Singapore and the MERGA community is very excited to be returning to NIE following the success of the 2012 conference. Hosting a conference in Singapore is an important opportunity to share research and make connections with colleagues who may not have attended a MERGA conference before. We particularly welcome teachers, early career researchers and experienced researchers who are new to MERGA as well as our regular attendees. The theme for MERGA43 is Excellence in Mathematics Education: Foundations and Pathways. This theme provides an important platform for participants to consider the critical nature of our research and the ways we can use our findings to influence the field of mathematics education and educational policy throughout Australasia. I sincerely thank our colleagues at NIE and the conference organising committee for their efforts in planning and managing the conference, and I look forward to welcoming you to MERGA43.
Associate Professor Catherine Attard
President, Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA)
The Mathematics and Mathematics Education (MME) Academic Group of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore is proud to be the host of the 43rd MERGA in July 2020. MERGA returns to Singapore after 8 years. Many of us have attended MERGA regularly and have been enriched by the experience, and so we are pleased that many more of our colleagues in Singapore will now be able to learn and discover together in this vibrant conference. The plenary speakers are always specially chosen to inspire action in education and to provoke reflection on methods and theories underlying our actions and research. The wide range of talks also provide a platform for established and new researchers to present their work and obtain feedback and discussion.
The theme of the conference Excellence in Mathematics Education: Foundations and Pathways reflect our desire to uplift society by providing quality education for all. Mathematics is an important vehicle for social mobility, not as an imposition by an elitist oligarchy but as a reality in an increasingly knowledge based economy.
Participants from overseas can also look forward to an exciting stay in this cosmopolitan and vibrant city called Singapore, where the East meets the West. Apart from being a shopper’s paradise and a foodie’s ‘guilt trip’, Singapore offers visitors many surprises in our list of tourist attractions, including theme parks, art galleries, museums, and nature reserves.
In the month of July in 2020, there are two other major mathematics education conferences taking place in Asia, namely ICME in Shanghai, China and PME in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Not for the faint of heart, but it is certainly possible to go to all three conferences!
See you in Singapore!
