MERGA Conference 2012
The 35th Annual Conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) is hosted by the Mathematics and Mathematics Education Academic Group (MME) of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
From the President of MERGA - Merrilyn Goos
It gives me great pleasure to welcome delegates to the 35th annual conference of
the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA). This is the first
time that a MERGA conference is to be held outside Australia and New Zealand, and
it is fitting that Singapore is the host. MERGA's Singapore members have been strong
supporters of the annual conference, and Singapore is the home of our third largest
group of members. Holding the conference in Singapore also acknowledges MERGA's
increasing reach and influence in the south east Asian region. The conference organisers
have planned a stimulating program that blends the customary features of MERGA conferences
with innovative additions. I'm looking forward to welcoming old and new colleagues
to this exciting conference.
From the HEAD, MME - Ang Keng Cheng
It is indeed a privilege and pleasure for the Mathematics and Mathematics Education
(MME) Academic Group of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, to
be the host of the 35th MERGA in July 2012. For the first time since its establishment,
the MERGA conference will be held outside of Australia and New Zealand, making it a truly and Australasian,
or even international, affair. A distinctly engaging conference programme awaits
all participants, foreign and local. Besides the usual plenary speeches and paper
presentations, a special programme consisting of lectures and workshops has been
lined up for teachers. Visits to local schools have also been arranged for international
Participants from overseas can also look forward to an exciting stay in this cosmopolitan
and vibrant city called Singapore, where the East meets the West. Apart from being
a shopper’s paradise and the melting pot of sumptuous Asian cuisines, Singapore
offers visitors many surprises in our list of tourist attractions, including theme
parks, art galleries, museums and theatres, and nature reserves.
In the month of July in 2012, there are two other major mathematics education conferences
taking place in Asia, namely ICME in Seoul, Korea and PME in Taipei, Taiwan. The
three cities, Singapore, Taipei and Seoul, are nearly collinear points on the world
map. It is perhaps an excellent way to begin your venture into mathematics education
this coming July with MERGA in Singapore, before moving along this Asian axis to
the other two cities.
On behalf of MME/NIE, I invite all mathematics educators, mathematics teachers and
mathematicians with interest in mathematics education to MERGA 2012.
See you in Singapore!
