About myself

I joined the Mathematics and Mathematics Education (MME) Academic Group, National Institute of Education (NIE) in July 2009.   NIE is an institute of the Nanyang Techonological University (NTU), Singapore.  My first degree was from the National University of Singapore, where I obtained my BSc(Hons) in Mathematics.  I completed my M.Sc. (by Research) in Mathematics at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2002 under the supervision of Dr. Zhao Dongsheng.  Then I pursued my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham under the supervision of Dr. Martin Escardó.  After my graduation in 2006, I returned to Singapore in 2007 and worked in the education sector for almost two years, respectively in Singapore Polytechnic and Raffles Institution (Junior College).

I am married and have three lovely children.  Here are some cool pictures I took in various places I had been to.

Research interests

My current research interests can be broadly dichotomized into those pertaining to mathematics (pure and applied) and those pertaining to mathematics education.  The former class includes topology and its applications in computer science, algorithmic topology of data types, domains and continuous lattices in analysis and topology, convergence spaces, programming language semantics, domain theory, order theory, lambda-calculus, functional programming and artificial life.  The second class largely deals with effective classroom teaching strategies by making use of the history of mathematics, information technology, and so on.

Students

·         2015-present: Hadrian Andradi, Generalisation of quasi-continuous structures and its applications.

Hadrian is investigating possible tracks of generalisation of the theory of quasi-continuous posets, with a particular bent towards developing the quasi-continuous theory to general T0 spaces.  This fits into a larger research programme undertaken by myself in the direction of formulating the core of domain theory directly in topological spaces.

·         2011-2013: Khoo Shun Chih, Domain Theory.

In his thesis, Shun Chih studied Stone and Hoffmann Dualities, which are two key results in domain theory.  Shun Chih invented a new class of dcpo’s called the C-dominated posets, and proved many interesting results concerning the order-topological structure of the lattice of Scott closed sets over this new category.

·         2012: Hadrian Andradi, The Way-Below Relation on Function Spaces from Topological Spaces to Domain.

In his thesis, Hadrian studies a beautiful theorem for characterising the function space from topological spaces to domains, which is due to Erker, Escardó and Keimel.  This student was jointly supervised by Dr. Ch. Rini Indrati (main supervisor) under an NIE non-graduating studentship scheme.
